This renowned tale, drawn from the Hindu mythological text Markandeya Purana, is dated between the 4th and 6th centuries CE based on epigraphical evidence. Among the many Hindu mythological sagas on Garbhasanskara, this one offers a compelling narrative. Queen Madalsa, the wife of king Rutudhvaja of Kashi( a city in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh), was a deeply spiritual person. In their kingdom, it was customary to predict the unborn child’s characteristics, nature, and constitution before birth. By contemplating these features and adopting a healthy lifestyle, Queen Madalsa gave birth to three sons, Vikrant, Subahu, and Shatrumardana, who all became ascetics and left. Concerned about the succession to his realm, King Rutudhvaja urged Queen Madalsa to conceive another child. By reflecting on the king’s attributes, nature, and political behaviour during conception, she gave birth to a son who would inherit the kingdom. This son, King Alark, carried on his father’s legacy. This event underscores the profound influence of Matru shakti (the power of the mother) and Garbhasanskara. Indeed, a mother can shape her offspring’s character and destiny through her thoughts, actions, and lifestyle during pregnancy.
