According to classical text, on these days (occasions), sex is prohibited:

• Twilight period, midnight, midday (noon)

• Eight days (Ashtami), fourteen days (Chaturdashi) of the lunar fortnight in either the waxing or waning phase of the moon

• Sankranti period, i.e. movement of sun from one zodiac to another in the Indian astronomical calendar

Intercourse is allowed other than these above-mentioned days… why?

The gravitational force of celestial bodies like the sun and moon is known to influence natural rhythms on earth, such as ocean tides and biological systems. Ayurveda says the alignment may affect the body’s prana (vital energy), leading to a temporary reduction in strength and vitality.

Full moon: on this day the alignment of the earth, moon, and the sun enhances the moon’s gravitational pull on earth. This intensifies tidal effects in oceans. Since the human body is composed of 70% water, it is hypothesized that the moon’s gravitational influences might similarly affect bodily fluids, including blood.

And as water content is higher in blood, the equilibrium is not maintained for a cell (zygote) to transform into male or female (sex differentiation). Ayurveda believes that sex differentiation occurs at the point when zygote is formed.

Eight and fourteenth day: there is a stronger influence of moons on women’s physical and emotional state than a man’s. Again creating an imbalance in male and female eggs.

On the contrary, intercourse can be done at any time if a couple is in immense joy and eager to give birth to a divine child.

This belief beautifully integrates the power of human emotions and the synchrony with cosmic rhythms. The inner state of joy and readiness overrides the external factors, symbolizing that the auspiciousness is not merely about the calendar but about the alignment of mind, body and spirit.
